  • Name a book that moved you.

My mom is a children's librarian, and so when I was a kid in the 80s I remember going to a lot of children's bookstores.  One time I found a book that explained how to program computer games using BASIC on a Commodore 64.  I can't remember the specific name of the book, but I was immediately enthralled.  I've been "playing" with computers ever since.

During his time at Boston University, he was president of the Filipino Student Association where he has fostered a desire for working with others and making an impact on the surrounding community. That was the first time that I actually did work ahead of time for a class. It was just a clear sign to me that this was something I could do for the rest of my life.

  • What is your favorite movie?  Why?

Definitely, Maybe. I am a fan of rom coms, and that's my favorite one.

  • What's your favorite snack?

  • Have you ever met any celebrities? Who? Describe the encounter.

I have met David Spade before. I was walking around Downtown with a friend, and when we were walking past the Ritz-Carlton my friend noticed that David Spade was just hanging out in front of the hotel. My friend talks to him and tells him how much he loves Grown Ups, while I'm just standing there not saying a word. We walk away and then I realized how weird I must of looked, and my friend confirms that I was completely star struck.

  • If you were a cartoon character, which would you be?

I would have to be Spider-Man.

Zoe Carlberg

  • Senior Project Manager

Zoe is a project manager working on the Health & Human Services (HHS) team.

Zoe grew up exploring tide pools on Boston’s rocky North Shore. After getting her degree in environmental analysis at Pomona College in California, a stint in AmeriCorps brought her to a sustainable agriculture nonprofit in southwestern Montana. For a few rural, high-altitude years she developed educational and community outreach programs at their urban demonstration farm and managed client intake for their national information hotline, but ultimately she decided to leave the mountains and return to the sea. Zoe is happy to work for Annkissam and help facilitate the important work of our clients in the nonprofit world.

Zoe joined the Annkissam team in 2015.

  • We have your college and graduate school names, years of graduation and your degree(s). Is there anything else from your college, graduate school or other formal education experience that would be good to share?

As part of my senior thesis project, I walked 60+ miles on foot across the sprawlingly car-centric Los Angeles County, and documented what I found along the way with an exhibition of pen and ink illustrations.

  • What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

I grow a lot of vegetables, and I've broken out an old pinhole camera that I made a few years back but never did much with. I love how flexible and unpredictable the process of making a photograph is with a camera where the only things you can control are the exposure time and how much to wind the film.

Laura Phenix

  • Senior Project Manager

Laura is a project manager working on the Billing / Eligibility team. She says, “I enjoy problem-solving with both the developers and our clients to find ways to continuously create a more effective and efficient product. As our clients grow, their problems change and there are always new solutions to be figured out.”

Laura graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in social policy and moved to San Francisco, where she worked at a local homeless services agency helping families move from shelter back to housing. It was here that she learned how to use technology to streamline processes and became a self-taught database administrator. This experience brought Laura back to Boston to get her MBA focused in nonprofit management and Masters in information systems from Boston University. She is excited to have found a job that allows her to blend both the business and technology practices all while supporting nonprofits.

Laura joined the Annkissam team in 2015.

  • What do you like about working at Annkissam?

Annkissam is a perfect blend of my past experience working in community health center and with low-income families, many of whom earned income by providing in-home care to individuals along with my interest in how technology can move the nonprofit sector forward. It has been great to be at a company that still focuses so much on mission while having more resources to operate with compared to my past nonprofit experience.

  • Won a million dollars?

I would take a trip around the world focused on the southern hemisphere. My first trip abroad was when I was four-years-old and I haven't stopped traveling since. Despite all my travel I've never made it south of the equator and I'd jump at the opportunity to go on a months-long trip.

  • Why did you choose the college you chose?

I had to make a decision in less than 2 hours after learning that my counselor wanted me to apply Early Decision, and the deadline was in 2 days. So I chose Middlebury because they were a liberal arts college with a geography department. After sending my application I started learning more about Middlebury and was very happy with my decision.

  • What do you like about working at Annkissam?

I have never worked in a place where the staff, from the developers all the way to the executives, is as transparent, open, helpful, and accessible as they are at Annkissam. This internal transparency makes Annkissam a more interesting place to work because I have the opportunity to understand so much more about various aspects of the business than just what is necessary for my role as a Business Analyst. I also enjoy being able to take on additional projects outside my scope of work that contribute to my professional development.

  • What is a fun, random fact about you?

During the week of Passover one year, I did a "reverse Exodus" trip with a group of friends in Egypt. We started in Israel, went through the Sinai desert, climbed (the supposed) Mount Sinai, then went to Cairo, and then the pyramids at Giza and Saqqarah. It was an incredible trip and was truly something special to eat matzah on horseback at the pyramids!
