About Us

We help nonprofits and social enterprises navigate their data

Annkissam was founded in 2007 to provide innovative, affordable technology solutions for mission-driven organizations. We recognize that each mission-driven organization is unique, with unique challenges, opportunities, and operations. We build custom software systems that are tailored to fit your organization’s needs and budget. With most software products, an organization pays for features it doesn't need and doesn't get some of the features it truly wants. This can frustrate staff, curb efficiency and zap scarce resources. With custom software, the organization using the system defines exactly how it works.

Our Values

These are the principles that guide our decision-making

Quality
Quality is the foundation of our work; our goal is that every customer, staff member, vendor and partner has a positive experience with Annkissam.
Honesty
Honesty is expected in all dealings. Our commitment to honesty with each other fosters an environment of continuous improvement at Annkissam.

Kindness
Kindness manifests itself in respect for others, a helpful attitude, and even in common courtesies such as "please" and "thank you."
How did Annkissam get its name?
Co-founders Gavin and Mollie put their middle names together and liked the combined sound: Annkissam

Zoe Carlberg

  • Project Manager

Zoe grew up exploring tide pools on Boston’s rocky North Shore. After getting her degree in environmental analysis at Pomona College in California, a stint in AmeriCorps brought her to a sustainable agriculture nonprofit in a former copper boomtown in southwestern Montana. For a few rural, high-altitude years she developed educational and community outreach programs at their urban demonstration farm and managed client intake for their national information hotline, but ultimately she decided to leave the mountains and return to the sea. Zoe is happy to work for Annkissam and help facilitate the important work of our clients in the nonprofit world.

  • We have your college and graduate school names, years of graduation and your degree(s). Is there anything else from your college, graduate school or other formal education experience that would be good to share?

As part of my senior thesis project, I walked 60+ miles on foot across the sprawlingly car-centric Los Angeles County, and documented what I found along the way with an exhibition of pen and ink illustrations.

  • What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

I grow a lot of vegetables, and I've broken out an old pinhole camera that I made a few years back but never did much with. Laura Phenix

  • Senior Project Manager

Laura grew up in Boston and spent a lot of time volunteering and working at a local community health center primarily serving low-income patients, including a summer spent in the billing department filing claims with the state. After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in Social Policy she moved to San Francisco and worked at a local homeless services agency helping families move from shelter back to housing. It was here that she began learning how to use technology to streamline processes and became a self-taught database administrator. This experience brought Laura back to Boston to get her MBA focused in Nonprofit Management and Masters in Information Systems from Boston University. She is excited to have found a job that allows her to blend both the business and technology practices all while supporting nonprofits.

  • What do you like about working at Annkissam?

Annkissam is a perfect blend of my past experience working in community health center and with low-income families, many of whom earned income by providing in-home care to individuals along with my interest in how technology can move the nonprofit sector forward. It has been great to be at a company that still focuses so much on mission while having more resources to operate with compared to my past nonprofit experience.

Aditya (Adi) Iyengar

  • Rails Developer

Adi grew up in Mumbai, India. He holds a BS in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics from Grand Valley State University. He is obsessed with learning, which is why he took a lot of non-computer science classes for fun (especially Physics and Chemistry). Adi chose Computer Science because of how applicable it is. He likes to apply everything he learns into Computer Science to improve (or create) a software. He also enjoys playing billiards, breakdancing, and composing music. He enjoys working at Annkissam because everyone who works here has different academic backgrounds (Physics, Economics, Bio-Chem, etc.) making it a great place to start a conversation and learn something new.

Michael Juhasz

  • Rails Developer

Michael moved to Boston to pursue graduate studies in anthropology of religion at Harvard, planning to get a PhD and march down the path to the professoriate. However, he realized that his view of the outside world was getting dimmer and dusky and it became harder to see how his work was going to have a real, positive impact. After finishing his master’s program, he decided to dive into computer science - because he thought he might be able to have a more immediate effect on pressing matters. With the abrupt change in careers and nontraditional background, he expected he'd need to suffer through a job or two with an organization whose goals were unaligned, if not at odds with his own. Imagine his delight at finding Annkissam, at being able to work toward the good, right out of the gate.

  • Name a book that moved you. Why?

I can't think of a whole book that moved me, but I find plenty of moments of potent sympathy: that scene with the punchbowl in Pnin (Nabokov), a young man eating toast with jam in A Book of Memories (Péter Nádas), much of the last chapter of Falconer (Cheever). If I said why, it'd ruin the scenes for you.

  • What celebrity have you been told you look like?

I wasn't told who, but whomever I look like, he must be pretty cool and possibly European. At a club in Romania, a group of excited fans of the person they thought I was yanked me off the dance floor to take some pictures with me. On the street in Spain, someone stopped me to shake my hand, another to give me a high five. In Hungary, a park bench-full of fourteen-year-old girls inaudibly screamed when I drove past.

Charlie Steinberg

  • Project Manager

People were confused when Charlie said he’d gone into the world of tech. As a Middlebury English major, his marketable skills were in the critical analysis of literature, decryption of poetry, and sitting in dark rooms while thinking deeply about profound things. Scholar or starving artist seemed the obvious post-grad paths, but his summers spent working for mission-driven small businesses, nonprofits, and startups presented another route. At each of these organizations, Charlie’s favorite part of the job was the helping and fixing—he’d put his liberal arts analytical thinking to use straightening something out, making something easier, or just being the extra hand that was always needed. After graduating, he joined the Exeter Group, a Boston-based IT consulting firm, where he worked on a project management team providing IT solutions (professional “helping and fixing”) for public sector healthcare initiatives. Annkissam then emerged as a place where he could continue this type of work while focusing specifically on mission-driven clients. Outside of work, Charlie enjoys running around the city, cooking, and pugs.

  • Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

I am an experienced short order cook. I guess this means I can help our clients with their business AND breakfast needs.

  • What is your favorite movie? Why?

Moonstruck. It's Nic Cage and Cher at their respective bests... which I suppose isn't something that necessarily makes it any more appealing to the majority of people... but I love it.

Awjin Ahn

  • Rails Developer

"What do you want to do when you grow up?" Awjin knew in his little third-grader heart that he'd be a writer someday. Little did he know that he'd be writing, yes, but mostly in code, into a terminal, to machines. Awjin is lucky to have discovered computer science at Swarthmore College--partly because it let him weasel out of the engineering program, but mostly because he can now focus his creativity into a functional, tangible service helping others. Outside of work, Awjin loves authentic Chinese food and indie games.

  • Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.

When I was 8, I won my very first goldfish from a carnival. His name was Goldy. Goldy was unique! Goldy was talented! Goldy died two days later. To honor his memory, I haven't had a pet since.

  • What baffles you?

The brain is a limited, physical object. It can't process certain types of problems efficiently, so some questions might never be answered by humanity. Both baffling and humbling.

  • What is a fun, random fact about you?

I have a quirky hobby: aviation photography and plane spotting. I'm part of local spotting group where we gather around the airport chatting airplanes and taking pictures. We've even traveled together. While for most people an airport is just a transit point, for us it's a destination in and of itself. My favorite trip was to St. Maarten which is the world's most well-known spotter airport. Several of my photos from there have been published online.

I have never worked in a place where the staff, from the developers all the way to the executives, is as transparent, open, helpful, and accessible as they are at Annkissam. This internal transparency makes Annkissam a more interesting place to work because I have the opportunity to understand so much more about various aspects of the business than just what is necessary for my role as a Business Analyst. I also enjoy being able to take on additional projects outside my scope of work that contribute to my professional development.

  • What is a fun, random fact about you?

During the week of Passover one year, I did a "reverse Exodus" trip with a group of friends in Egypt. We started in Israel, went through the Sinai desert, climbed (the supposed) Mount Sinai, then went to Cairo, and then the pyramids at Giza and Saqqarah. It was an incredible trip and was truly something special to eat matzah on horseback at the pyramids!

Tara spent her formative years among the rolling hills and rugged coastline of Northern California before moving to New York state to attend Colgate University for college.
